The University of South Australia is a modern and innovative institution built on more than 150 years of research, teaching and learning excellence. Its global reputation continues to grow, as exemplified by the 2011 QS World Rankings in which UniSA rose at a faster rate than any Australian university for the second consecutive year. It is now ranked 11th in Australia, and among the top three per cent of universities worldwide. With more than 36,000 students - around 12,000 of which are international students - it is South Australia's biggest university, and offers a diverse range of under-graduate and post-graduate programs in the sciences, business, engineering, information technology, health, environment and the arts. Programs are designed with strong professional emphasis and in partnership with industry, and more than 90 per cent of UniSA's graduates now in full-time work are employed in professional occupations. It was ranked in the top 100 universities of the world on the employer reputation index of the QS Rankings, and is part of the Australian Technology Network of universities. The University of South Australia continues to develop a strong research environment, and has six research institutes, 17 research centres and is a key partner in eight Co-operative Research Centres. It ranks in the top one third of Australian universities for research income, and in the recent Excellence in Research for Australia evaluation, 70 per cent of its assessed research was deemed to be of world-class or above. The University's research capabilities include the Ian Wark Research Institute (minerals and materials), the Mawson Institute (advanced manufacturing) and the Sansom Institute (health and biomedical). In addition, its emerging research priorities focus on the major national and global issues of today - social health, natural resources protection, sustainable energy, design and technology innovation, Asian business, and the International Centre for Muslim and non-Muslim Understanding which is championed and supported by former Prime Minister, Bob Hawke. The University of South Australia also maintains the strong commitment to teaching and learning excellence that were the hallmark of its antecedent institutions, including the Adelaide School of Arts (established in 1856) and the Adelaide School of Mines (1889). Its Division of Business is one of only eight business schools in Australia to have its programs accredited by the European Quality Improvement System (EQIS), and its academics have twice won the nation's highest university teaching honour, the Prime Minister's Award for University Teacher of the Year. With campuses in the heart of the city, in metropolitan Adelaide and Whyalla, as well as a regional centre in Mount Gambier, the University of South Australia provides opportunities to students from a wide range of geographic, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. It is currently implementing a $1 billion-plus building program to further enhance its state-of-the-art physical and virtual infrastructure, and is a proud supporter of vital community events, including the Adelaide Festival and the Tour Down Under, the southern hemisphere's pre-eminent road cycling race.
