La Trobe University was established in 1964 as Victoria's third university. Since its inception the University has had a clear purpose: to serve the community through the relevance and inclusiveness of its research and teaching.

To date, more than 140,000 alumni have graduated from La Trobe's five faculties: Business, Economics and Law; Education; Humanities and Social Sciences; Health Sciences; and Science, Technology and Engineering.

The University now offers more than 390 undergraduate and postgraduate courses and hosts more than 28,000 students, including over 6,000 international students from more than 90 countries.

Its largest campus is in the Melbourne suburb of Bundoora, approximately 14km from the city centre. This 330 hectare campus is home to the La Trobe University Research and Development Park - Australia's largest wholly university owned and managed technology park, and the Melbourne Wildlife Sanctuary.

Historically, La Trobe has focused on creating opportunity for all who can benefit from higher education. It is now a leading provider of regional higher education in Australia with campuses in Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Mildura and Shepparton. This network of campuses plays a central role in the development of regional Victoria - a role that has been significantly enhanced by the recent establishment of the $75 million La Trobe Rural Health School.

La Trobe hosts 24 per cent of Victoria's regional higher education students and has the highest regional student retention rate in the state - 88per cent. In 2010, regional students accounted for 32.4 per cent of the University's domestic enrolments - well above the state average of 18 per cent. Sixty-six per cent of the University's regional graduates go on to find employment in regional Victoria.

The University is investing significantly in new and innovative teaching and learning spaces, and research facilities. These include a new $10.9 million campus building in Shepparton, a $10 million redevelopment of the library at the Melbourne campus, and a $1.9 million dental training facility in Bendigo.

The Centre for AgriBioscience (AgriBio) on La Trobe's Melbourne campus will be operational in 2012. AgriBio is part of a $288 million joint venture with the Victorian Government and is set to be a world-leading centre for agricultural bioscience research and development. Construction of the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science is also underway on the Melbourne campus. The $94 million complex will position the University as an international research leader in molecular science and biotechnology.

In 2011, the Australian Government's Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative recognised La Trobe as Australia's leading university in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. The University was also awarded a rating 5 - `well above world standard' - for research in Biological Sciences, Condensed Matter Physics, Human Movement and Sports Science.
