The University of Melbourne is a leading centre of higher education and research in Australia, located in Parkville on the fringe of Melbourne's central business district.

The University's high rankings in independent international surveys reflect its strong research performance, excellence in learning and teaching and the intellectual and social capital accumulated over the past 158 years. In the prestigious 2011 Times Higher Education rankings of the world's top 200 universities, Melbourne ranked 1st in Australia and 37th in the world. With this result, Melbourne is the highest placed Australian university in three of the four major world rankings, topping the Shanghai Jiao Tong and the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan rankings nationally, and placing second in the QS table.

The University has about 49,000 students, including 11,800 international students, and 7,000 staff. It offers degrees in humanities, science, the creative and performing arts, social science and the professions. In 2007, the University launched a groundbreaking new curriculum to better equip its graduates with the breadth and depth of education they will need in their future careers.

In 2010, the first students enrolled in new undergraduate courses in arts, biomedicine, commerce, environments, music and science graduated from the University. The University of Melbourne offers one of Australia's most comprehensive scholarship programs, both merit and equity based. The Access Melbourne program, now extended to professional graduate courses, assists more than 1,000 students each year who have experienced educational, financial or social disadvantage.

Melbourne also leads in strategically important research, which is reflected in more than 90 research centres. In 2011, it was awarded one National Health and Medical Research Council Australia Fellowship and three Australian Laureate Fellowships. The University has one of the largest cohorts of graduate researchers in Australia with more than 4800 PhD, research doctorate and masters by research candidates. Additionally, in 2010 the University of Melbourne awarded nearly 10 per cent of all PhD degrees in Australia.

Last year, Melbourne's researchers also secured the largest total amount of research income as well as the most Australian Competitive Grant funding. They produced the most weighted publications, the most research degree completions, and won the most Australian Postgraduate Awards and International Postgraduate Research Scholarships. The University's research performance has also contributed to it being the home of an IBM Research and Development Centre and Stem Cells Australia (SCA).

The University also contributes to Australia's cultural dynamism through programs such as the Melbourne Theatre Company, Melbourne University Publishing, the Ian Potter Museum of Art and Asialink.
