The University of New South Wales is ranked in the top 50 universities in the world, renowned for the quality of its graduates and its commitment to new and creative approaches to education and research. UNSW is a founding member of the prestigious Group of Eight research intensive universities in Australia, and a member of the Universitas 21 international consortium.

Established in 1949 with a scientific and technological focus, UNSW has expanded rapidly and now has more than 50,000 students, including around 14,500 international students from 120 countries. The University has developed an extensive network of alumni chapters throughout Asia.

The main UNSW campus is located on a 38-hectare site at Kensington, seven kilometres from the centre of Sydney. Other campuses are the College of Fine Arts (Paddington), UNSW Canberra, and sub-campuses at Randwick and Coogee, as well as research stations across NSW.

UNSW has a broad disciplinary base, offering more than 600 undergraduate and 300 postgraduate programs across the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences; Built Environment; Engineering; Law; Medicine; Science; College of Fine Arts; Australian School of Business; and the Australian Defence Force Academy.

UNSW's world-class research focuses on areas critical to the future - from climate change and renewable energies to life-saving medical treatments and breakthrough technologies. The University's award-winning researchers are strongly represented in national and international prizes, honours and fellowships.

Particular areas of strength include quantum computing, molecular engineering, photovoltaics, robotics, biomedical research, financial markets and design and interactive cinema. UNSW has strong collaborative links with industry and business, consistently performing at the top nationally in ARC Industry Linkage Grants. The University's' expertise is also regularly sought after by business and government for a wide range of consultancy and training services.

UNSW has close to 100 centres and affiliated institutes focusing on research, teaching, and community outreach. Opening in 2012 is the Tyree Energy Technologies Building, which will support the University's internationally recognised research and teaching in key energy areas. In 2010, the Prime Minister opened the Lowy Cancer Research Centre, one of the largest dedicated research facilities in Australia and the first to bring together adult and childhood cancers researchers in one building.

The University is a member of more than 10 Cooperative Research Centres and is affiliated with a number of prestigious medical research institutes, including the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and Neuroscience Research Australia.
