The University of Queensland (UQ) is in the top one per cent of all universities worldwide as measured through a combination of three key global rankings - the Times Higher, Shanghai Jiao Tong and QS World University. UQ has won more Australian Teaching and Learning Council Awards for Teaching Excellence than any other university in the country and attracts the vast majority of Queensland's highest academic achievers, as well as top interstate and overseas students. UQ's almost 200,000 graduates include a Nobel laureate, an Academy Award winner, and leaders in government, law, science, public service and the arts. It has six faculties and 45,455 students including one of Australia's largest PhD enrolments and more than 11,000 international students from 134 nations. In 2011, 4574 research higher degree students were enrolled at UQ (4006 PhD and 568 MPhils). The University recently celebrated its 9000th PhD graduation. With $29.79 million for almost 100 projects, UQ topped the nation in the number of grants awarded and was second in dollar value for the 2012 round one funding of the Australian Research Council Discovery Projects scheme. In recent years, UQ has created eight world-class research institutes - the Institute for Molecular Bioscience; the Queensland Brain Institute; the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology; the Sustainable Minerals Institute; the UQ Diamantina Institute; the Institute for Social Science Research; the Global Change Institute; and the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation - which has led to innovative discoveries such as the development of the world's first cervical cancer vaccine. UQ ranks first among Australian universities for licence income, value of equity holdings and invention disclosures, new Australian patents and active start-up companies. Established by UQ in 1984, UQ's UniQuest is widely recognised as one of Australia's largest and most successful university commercialisation groups. Working with agencies such as AusAID, NZAID, the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank, UniQuest has developed and implemented more than 400 projects in 46 countries throughout the Pacific, South-East Asia, the Indian sub-continent and Africa. UQ is committed to developing state-of-the-art learning spaces that are in step with industry demands and expectations. Facilities, such as the $96 million Pharmacy Australia Centre of Excellence (PACE) precinct which adjoins the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, the new $100 million School of Veterinary Science at the Gatton campus, and the soon to be completed $133 million Advanced Engineering Building at St Lucia and $120 million Oral Health facility at Herston, grant students access to world-class researchers and industry professionals. The UQ Graduate School aims to increase the number of students enrolled in research higher degrees at UQ through the UQ Career Advantage PhD Program. Designed to accelerate career development and enhance employability, it offers three packages: Higher Education Practice and Leadership; Research Innovation, Translation and Commercialisation; and Global Collaborations.
