Universities Australia congratulates the incoming Labor Government and Mr Kevin Rudd MP as Australia's 26th Prime Minister and welcomes today's formal announcement of Ms Julia Gillard MP as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education and Senator Kim Carr as Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.
Universities Australia Chief Executive Officer Dr Glenn Withers said that the university sector is looking forward to working with the incoming Labor Government in realising its vision for an Education Revolution.
"For the university sector this involves three key priorities:
defining the framework for the future of Australia's higher education sector;
reviewing the status of existing funding programs, such as the Research Quality Framework; and
implementing the specific Labor election commitments, such as the Future Fellowships.
"Together these priorities must address fundamental reform of core funding in teaching and research in universities, and improved equity and access to university for students," Dr Withers said.
"Universities Australia is looking forward to working with the incoming Ministers and their colleagues on these priorities, as they will underpin Australia's ability to build and manage its future," Dr Withers said.
