The Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee (AVCC) welcomes the release of the New Directions paper on innovation, competitiveness and productivity by the Opposition Leader, Mr Kevin Rudd, MP and Shadow Minister for Industry, Innovation, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr.

"The paper supports the AVCC position that bold public and private investment in its innovative people and institutions is critical if Australia is to keep up with the accelerating pace of growth of new knowledge and its application around the world," AVCC President Professor Gerard Sutton said.

"Vice-Chancellors are pleased that this paper acknowledges the vital role of universities in providing a platform on which Australia's future science and innovation capacity is built, in collaboration with business and government.

"Australia's future prosperity depends on our investment here and now in core research infrastructure and research training, to ensure we maintain and grow that capacity," Professor Sutton said.

The AVCC looks forward to working collaboratively to ensure the future robustness and international competitiveness of Australia's research and innovation system.
