Universities Australia has held three Higher Education Conferences in Canberra. The annual event provides a forum to discuss the policy agenda for higher education in Australia and internationally, and focus on important issues for higher education in the national interest.

As part of Universities Australia's contribution to public policy and debate, the secretariat coordinates and hosts a series of other events on a regular basis. Previous events are highlighted below:
- Emissions reduction - joint forum with Australia21 and and the National Business Leaders Forum on Sustainable Development
- Racism and the student experience - policy research workshop jointly hosted with the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and the Australian Human Rights Commission
