Universities Australia welcomes the opportunity to make this submission to the Coalition Deregulation Taskforce. Universities Australia is the peak national body representing the interests of 39 Australian universities and strongly supports the Coalition's moves to reduce the costs and burden of regulation.

There are a number of intersecting reforms that make a review of regulation in tertiary education particularly timely. These include the introduction of new sectoral regulators in the form of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) covering the higher education sector and the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) covering the vocational and training sector; the demand driven funding system; and the introduction of new programs and requirements in the arena of international education which are designed to address issues of quality across a diverse range of tertiary providers.
