Graduate Careers Council of Australia Course Experience Questionnaire Data 1995
Notes on Course Experience Questionnaire results, 23 January 1996.
This Course Experience Questionnaire data is for the 1995 survey of graduates who
completed their courses in 1994. The data is available in two file formats:
- Ceqdel95.txt is a comma delimited file with field names as
the first line.
- Ceqfix95.txt is a fixed length file with no delimiters.
Both files are sorted in order of Level of course then Field of Study then Institution.
Only results for courses with five or more respondents per institution are included.
Because of the small number of respondents, graduates of higher degrees (Ph.D, Masters
Research and Masters other) are not included. This year standard deviations have been
included.
Ceqfix95.dat is in the following format:

FOS
The codes for field of study are derived from those listed in the publication
"Field of Study Classification of Higher Education Courses", Commonwealth
Tertiary Education Commission, AGPS 1986 (Appendix C, Higher Education Student Data
Collection - Main Documentation, DEET). The FOS code is a four-digit code which consists
of digits two, four, five and six of the code in the TESC document and is used by the
Graduate Careers Council of Australia in the coding of the Graduate Destination Survey.
For example "Agriculture general" FOS=1201, TESC code=01.02.01.
Exceptions to this are FOS:
4299 Actuarial Studies
9901 Applied Electronics
9902 Applied Communications
9903 Applied Physics
9904 Applied Chemistry
9905 Applied Biology
9906 Other Applied Science courses
100 Veterinary Science
A list of codes for FOS's is included at the end of this document.
INST
This is a two digit code (data type text) unique to each institution,(and in some cases
campus within institution). The codes are the same as those used for 1993 data. It should
be noted that some institutions which had results listed for separate campuses in the 1993
data have chosen to have their results amalgamated into one institution code for 1994. In
these cases the code for the major campus has been used for presentation of results.

Institution Codes
The following are the previously secret codes used to identify institutions. In the
early years of the CEQ, institutions were not identified, but in later years institution
names were divulged (with their agreement) in order to facilitate better use of the CEQ
data.

MEANTCH, MEANCGS, MEANASS, MEANWKL, MEANCRS, MEANOVR
MEANTCH, MEANCGS, MEANASS, MEANWKL, MEANCRS, MEANOVR, are all mean scores for each of
these scales or items. They are accurate to one decimal place and have a range from -100.0
to +100.0. NTCH, NCGS, NASS, NWKL, NCRS, NOVR, are the number of respondents to questions
which relate to that particular scale. STDTCH, STDCGS, STDASS, STDWKL, STDCRS, STDOVR, are
all standard deviations for each of these scales or items. They are accurate to two
decimal places.
For further details and explanations of these scales the reader is referred to the
report "Course Experience Survey:1992", Ainley J.and Long M. (DEET 1994).
