The Senior Communications Adviser supports the Director, Strategic Communications to
manage Universities Australia’s public profile as an effective national peak body.
A competitive salary package is available for the fulltime ongoing role, based in Canberra.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Deal with media inquiries and draft potential public comment.
- Draft media releases and speeches.
- Liaise with journalists, MP’s offices and university representatives.
- Craft communication strategies and messaging to promote Universities Australia’s positions and the value of higher education.
- Help to develop our public awareness campaigns and content on university research breakthroughs as part of the communications team.
- Assist to compile and distribute media clips – and monitor coverage for information that should be shared with the broader team.
- Assist to advise and prepare the Chief Executive and other senior spokespeople for media interviews.
- Provide input on the marketing and branding of Universities Australia.
Skills and experience
- Experience writing media releases, communications plans and interview preparatory briefs at a high level.
- Experience at working with media and maintaining stakeholder networks.
- Knowledge of the workings of Parliament and the environment in which Government and public communications take place.
- Experience of public awareness and advocacy campaigning.
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently while meeting tight deadlines.
- An understanding of the higher education sector in Australia is desirable.
