Universities Australia congratulates Cabinet Minister Michaelia Cash and Assistant Minister Zed Seselja on their new roles in the crucial portfolios of Jobs, Innovation and Science.

And we wish former Industry, Innovation and Science Minister Arthur Sinodinos a speedy recovery and thank him for his strong commitment to research, science and innovation as Minister.

Universities Australia’s Acting Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said Senator Sinodinos had absolutely grasped the potential of the crucial Industry, Innovation and Science portfolio.

“In his time in this senior role, he saw how central these areas of policy are to the discovery of new knowledge, to jobs and growth, and to Australia’s future,” she said.

“And he stood up for science, evidence and facts – which are always fundamental to good policy – including in his powerful speech to the National Press Club earlier this year.”

“Our thoughts are with him and his family as he fights this health battle – and we look forward to seeing him fit and back in Canberra soon.”

We congratulate Senator Cash on her new Cabinet role as Minister for Jobs and Innovation, and Senator Zed Seselja as Assistant Minister for Science, Jobs and Innovation in the outer ministry.

We also welcome Nationals Deputy Leader Bridget McKenzie – who has a longstanding interest in higher education – to her new Cabinet roles as Minister for Rural Health, Regional Communications and Sport.

And we congratulate Education Minister Simon Birmingham on his elevation as Manager of Government Business in the Senate.

“Universities Australia looks forward to working with them all to advance Australia’s interests through smart investments in higher education, innovation and science,” Ms Jackson said.

We also thank former Assistant Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science Craig Laundy as he moves to a new role as Minister for Small and Family Business, Workplace and Deregulation.
