Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC)
The Higher Education Research Data Collection includes information on university research income from competitive grants, government, and industry sources, together with data on publications (books, chapters, journal articles and conference papers) and higher degree by research completions. This data is provided to DIISR from individual universities and is used as the basis for research block grant funding.

Gross expenditure on research & development, by sector
The Australian Bureau of Statistics publication Research and Experimental Development (cat 8112.0) provides an overview of research and development (R&D) activity in Australia by government, business, and the higher education sector. Data on R&D by type of activity (basic research, applied research, or experimental development) and field of research is available. The OECD publish regular statistics comparing Australia's performance in R&D to that of other countries.
