Universities Australia congratulates Anthony Albanese

Universities Australia congratulates Anthony Albanese and the Australian Labor Party on last night’s result.

“Universities look forward to working with the government, and across the entire parliament, to ensure that all Australians have the opportunity to reach their full potential,” Universities Australia Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said.

“We will work with the government to deliver the productivity gains that highly-skilled people and technological and social advances provide to the economy.’’

“Universities are a foundational part of an optimistic, productive modern economy and society. Our students, staff and researchers work across every area of human endeavour – giving our nation the best chance to tackle the toughest challenges and identify and grasp the big opportunities.”

“As we emerge from such challenging times, universities stand ready to play the fullest role in building back and taking advantage of the full spectrum of our national talent.”

“Before the pandemic universities contributed $41 billion to the economy and supported over 256,000 Australian jobs.”

“We must ensure universities are in a strong position so they can maximise their contribution to the nation.”

“It’s more urgent than ever that we invest in university teaching, learning and research capability.”

“Australians want sensible solutions to increase wages and their quality of life. One of the best ways to get people into well-paid work is to give them the education they need. Education delivers productivity.”

“Over the next five years, the National Skills Commission predicts more than 500,000 new jobs will require a Bachelor degree or higher.”

“As a nation we need more education and knowledge – not less, and more skilled graduates – not fewer, to fulfil the needs of a modern economy and society.”

“We must fund research sustainably to ensure we maintain a competitive position in a global economy.”
