Universities Australia welcomes Watt Review response

Universities Australia welcomes the commitment today by the Minister for Education and Training, Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham to address all 28 recommendations from the Review of Research Policy and Funding Arrangements, led by Dr Ian Watt AO.

Universities Australia Chief Executive Belinda Robinson said the implementation of several major recommendations was already underway in a swift but considered manner.

“Minister Birmingham and the Turnbull Government have hit the ground running on the important reforms suggested by the Watt Review,” she said.

“In particular, the response reflects wide-ranging sectoral consultation on the changes to the research block grants.

“The university sector is also deeply committed to building wider and deeper collaboration with industry – which is a key objective of the Watt Review’s recommendations.”

The announcement today coincides with the release of consultation papers seeking input on how to assess research engagement and impact, and options for restructuring the research block grants to encourage even greater partnerships and collaboration between university researchers and industry.
