Quality and reputation key to why international students choose Australia

Australian universities' commitment to quality has again been internationally recognised with the release of the 2014 International Student Survey report today.

The survey shows that quality and reputational factors are the top three reasons why international students choose Australia.

The top reasons cited were:

  • Reputation of chosen qualification (reported by 95 per cent of respondents);
  • Reputation of chosen institution (94 per cent); and
  • Reputation of Australia's education system (93 per cent).

"Australia's reputation as a world-leader in international education is built on a commitment to delivering an education experience of the highest quality - and as this survey shows, this isn't going unnoticed," said Chief Executive of Universities Australia, Ms Belinda Robinson.

"For decades, Australian universities have been working hard to improve their processes and limit the risks relating to international education - the same risks faced by universities throughout the world - and will continue to do so.

"So serious is our universities' commitment to quality that the establishment of Australia's independent national regulator of the higher education sector (TEQSA) had the backing and support of Universities Australia.

"Our universities were also strongly supportive of the creation of the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act - which ensures further Government oversight.

"Whilst our universities are proud of Australia's enviable reputation for quality, their commitment to continuous improvement is essential for maintaining the global high regard we enjoy.

"Our outward looking, globally connected universities are honoured to host so many international students from around the world.

"The high level of global engagement helps define and distinguish the Australian higher education system from most others," Ms Robinson said.
