Universities Australia members have agreed to implement the National Indigenous Higher Education Workforce Strategy (NIHEWS), as developed by the former Indigenous Higher Education Advisory Council.
The NIHEWS commits universities to undertake a range of actions intended to bring the number and dispersion of Indigenous employees within the higher education sector to population parity by 2021. The NIHEWS aims for equity for Indigenous people in terms of:
- access to quality continuing employment;
- representation at all levels and positions of employment; and
- participation in a wide range of work areas, including those that require accreditation and qualifications.
The NIHEWS is currently part of the work plan of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Education Advisory Council.
